PRACTICE !!!
Taking the time to develop regular practice habits in the first month or two will help to establish a routine for success not only in playing an instrument, but also in developing good study habits. This is the most important ingredient to make this a worthwhile experience.
Daily practice is essential for progress in any music study. Daily practice helps develop finger dexterity, helps strengthen facial/lip muscles, reinforces new lesson materials, and helps build confidence. An efficient method of practicing is equally important. Parents can help their child get the most out of their daily practicing by encouraging them in the following ways:
1. Beginners should practice at least 20 minutes per session.
2. All students are expected to practice a minimum of five days per week.
3. Practice at approximately the same time every day. Make it part of their daily schedule/routine.
4. Select a comfortable, quiet place to practice.
5. Use a music stand and a chair. This will ensure good posture and will promote correct breathing habits.
6. Play each section of a lesson or exercise several times correctly before moving on to a new section. Do not always start at the beginning of the tune.
ENCOURAGEMENT
While there are always exceptions, most children simply will not form efficient, effective practice habits on their own. Successful students are almost always encouraged and guided by their parents in their daily instrumental music practice just as they are in any of their other endeavors in their lives. It has been discovered and documented that the most successful instrumental students are those with interested and involved parents.
1. Be generous with your interest and praise.
2. Credit each achievement with some form of recognition.
3. Ask about his/her lesson and new assignment.
4. Recognize and praise daily practices.
