The Rule of Thumb

Selection of a book which is at an appropriate reading level

Remember to help your child through these steps until he or she is comfortable using them independently!

1. Choose a middle page with lots of words.
2. Begin reading.
3. If you come to a word you do not know, put down a finger.
4. If you find another tricky word, put down your next finger.
5. If you use up all your fingers, and get all the way to your thumb, the book is too challenging.
6. Find another book. Be sure you like the book you choose!

Levels of Difficulty

Assist your child in using these guidelines until he/she is familiar with them and is using them independently.
Consider the reading level:
Easy ("holiday" level) if
-the book flows for you
-the ideas are easy to understand
-the words are easy for you
Just right if
-you understand most of the ideas
-you might not know some words, but you can figure them out or use the "blank" strategy
Challenging if
-the book is hard for you to read
-you don't understand a lot of the ideas; you are confused a lot
-many of the words are hard for you
