Explanation of Prompts/Strategies/Clues |
| *Think about the story. | (What work would make sense there? Think aloud with your child) |
| *Check the Picuture. | (Does the picture give us a clue?) |
| *Read it a gain and get your mouth ready to try the first sound. | (Start at the beginning of the sentence) |
| *Look for chunks. | (Any familiar word parts? ch? ing? ly?) |
| *Now try it in the sentence: | |
| Does it make sense? | (Does it fit in with the story?) |
| Does it look right? | (Do the beginning/endletters match what you are saying?) |
| Does it sound right? | (Do the begining/end sonds match what you are saying?) |
| *Say "blank" and read on. Then go back to the tricky word. | (Words around the tricky word can sometimes help us to figure it out !) |
Help your child to rely on these prompts during reading: |
| -Show the prompts to your child. Review and explain. |
| -Model prompt use by verbally directing your child to use an appropriate, specific prompt while he/she is reading. (Think aloud as YOU use the prompt) |
| -Have your child begin to independently use the prompts by saying "what can you do?" when they encouner a difficult word. |
