SCHOOL OPENS SEPT. 3, 2008!!

As another school year begins at Manor School there will be some amazing changes in the gym!!   As a recipient of the Greater Rochester Health Foundation Grant we have some exciting new equipment for our students:  2 sections of interactive sport walls used in training athletes in colleges and pros for quickness, agility, stamina, endurance, eye/hand and eye/foot coordination as well as team building; 32 pads for Exerdance; a Trazer computerized fitness-enhancing unit; and 10 stationary bikes with GPS systems.  These pieces of equipment were obtained through the hard work of our students who have proven themselves serious about improving their levels of physical fitness!   We are MOST FORTUNATE to be one of the largest facilities in the state for this state-of-the-art physical fitness equipment.   We can’t wait to see the students’ faces when the come to Physical Education class in Sept.!!  During the year we will be having morning intramural programs using this equipment…information to follow and we’ll have a chance for the parents to come to try these out as well!!   Stay tuned to here, the newsletter and our PE bulletin board for further information.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES:  Please refer to the Dress Code Page of the web site for details and on the PE bulletin board near the cafeteria.  Please refrain from wearing crocs for physical activities as they are a danger to children’s safety!!  We’re not being mean when we ask your child to sit out, we’re being cautious!

Physical Fitness Testing:  The students will be given the FitnessGram Physical Fitness test during the classes to kick off our school year.  These scores are considered our baselines for comparison to their Spring scores.  Fourth and fifth grade students will receive a FitnessGram included in their report card, while 2nd and 3rd grade students will have their scores reported on the standard report card.   The items on the test include the mile or ¾ mile jog, curl-ups and push-ups.  We are excited about this new-to-our-program physical fitness test as of last Spring!!  You will notice that scores are reported as being in a healthy fitness zone for children their ages rather than against a single, standardized score.  Our goal is to get as many of our children in the healthy fitness zone as possible in all the items.
