English 9 Regents

Mr. Bacon

Course Overview, Rules and Procedures

Overview:

This course is designed to introduce you to a variety of different types of literature. During this year we will cover Short Stories, Poetry, Plays (Shakespearean and Modern American) and at least two novels. Each of these forms of literature will have writing projects to add to the learning process. We will also work with myths, multicultural literature, research, presentation skills, and non-fiction works.

Texts:

Texts and reading materials are provided by the school (with the exception of your Writers Inc. book). I will be drawing from a variety of different texts for the short story and poetry units. You are responsible for the texts issued to you. Please take care of them.

Writing:

Students will be required to keep a portfolio in class of different writing assignments. Pieces in the portfolio may be in progress or finished. We will review the basics of writing first before we move onto the different types of writing. Writing samples will be required of each student in his/her portfolio as a portion of your final grade for each semester. These types may include: Personal, Subject, Creative, Reflective and Academic.

Materials:

For each class you are responsible for bringing these materials everyday:

All texts (Every Day)

Notebook

Folder

Separate Composition Style Notebook for Journal

School Agenda

Pen (Blue or Black ink only. Homework will only be accepted in these two colors)

Quarterly Grades:

Grades are determined based on these areas. Point values are approximate.

Punctuality, Organization, Participation (25)

Homework (100)

Quizzes (150)

Tests (200)

Journals (100)

Portfolio (100)

Grades are determined on a percentage of the total points for that quarter.

Final Exam:

At the end of each semester there is a final exam similar to the Regents exam.

Expectations:

1 Students will be prepared with above materials everyday.

  1. Students will be on time everyday! If you are late, have a documented excuse before entering class.
  2. Students will keep track of all assignments in their School Agenda. Assignments will either be given orally or written on the blackboard.
  3. All assignments must be made up promptly by any student absent for any reason(s).
  4. When relating to the teacher and/or other students, a measure of respect for his/her individual dignity and personal rights is expected. Deviance from this policy will not be tolerated. This is a forum for learning not a contest for who can cast the best insult.

Expect to work for the entire period. Do not anticipate the bell and begin "packing up" or "leaving your seat." I will dismiss you in time to get to your next class or to line up for your delicious lunch.
