6th Grader Sending Big Money to Africa

Sixth grader Oliver Hanson was given an opportunity by his teacher Mrs. Lavery to help one of the many causes in Africa. Oliver jumped at the chance to help others and went to work putting together a fundraiser. He decided to raise money for a charity called "Ryan's Wells." The goal of the Foundation is to raise funds around the world and build wells in Africa that will provide fresh water to people in need. Ryan’s Well has three primary goals: BUILD, EDUCATE and MOTIVATE – building water and sanitation projects in developing countries; educating students about the need for clean water and the possibility of making a difference in their world; and motivating people, especially youth, to take action and make a positive change in our world.
Oliver was able to raise $1,267 through a raffle to send to Ryan's Wells. We would like to commend Oliver on his efforts in helping others around the world!!

Patriot's Pen Essay Winner
Places 23rd in Nation

The Honeoye Falls – Lima School District congratulates this year’s Patriot’s Pen essay winners, Leo Patrick and Kristy Walker. Students in Mrs. Preston’s Middle School Social Studies classes wrote essays this fall to recognize and honor U.S. Veterans. Patrick won first place in the regional contest, and Walker took second. As the regional champion, Patrick’s essay went on to the State level. He placed first in that competition as well, advancing him to the national competition. Out of 115,000 entrants in the national competition, Patrick placed 23rd.
“Placing 23rd in the nation is quite an accomplishment,” said Middle School Principal Shawn Williams. “The ability to communicate in writing is a skill that future employers will certainly look for our students to demonstrate.”

Character Counts
Eighth graders Abby Tobin and Denny Segrue were honored by HFL Athletic Director Brian Donohue by winning the Character Counts Award. Each month four students who participate in high school athletics are selected. Players are nominated through their coaches and below are the comments from our student’s coaches!
Denny Segrue – Freshman Basketball Team:
Denny displays a consistent work ethic in practice and at games, no matter what the circumstances. He is by far one of the hardest working and most disciplined student athletes I have ever coached. He is also unselfish and team oriented when it comes to minutes played and position, and always treats his teammates, coaches and officials with the utmost respect, day in and day out.
- Coach Pat Higgins
Abby Tobin – Freshman Basketball Team:
I would like to recommend Abby Tobin for the character counts distinction. Abby was my lone captain this year and did an incredible job of being a coach on the floor. We had a number of young and inexperienced players on this team and Abby was the glue that held our team together. Abby is always positive and gives 100%, thus setting an excellent example for the rest of her team.
- Coach Bob Clarke
Congratulations Abby & Denny for your achievement and thank you for representing the Middle School so well!
