Clubs and Activities

The Performing Arts

Middle School Chorus:
Students can audition for membership in the chorus. Under the direction of Mrs. Salter, the chorus will perform at public concerts and school programs. The chorus meets during the regular school day as a scheduled class.

Middle School Band:
Our school offers a 6th grade band and a combined 7/8 band. The 7/8 combined band performs under the direction of Mr. Coughlin in concerts, parades and school assemblies. Ms. Beckman directs the 6th grade band in public concerts and school assemblies. Students participate in small group lessons each week and meet during the regular school day as a class.
 
Brass Choir:
Open to all brass instrument players in the band. Meets from Sept. to May on Thursdays from 2:10 - 3:00 PM.

Clarinet Choir:
This group is open to all clarinet players playes. They meet from Sept. to May on Thursdays from 5:00 - 6:00 PM.
Flute Choir:
The flute choir is open to all flute players. They meet Sept. to May on Mondays from 2:10 to 3:30 PM.
Jazz Band:
The Jazz Band is open to all insturmental students. Jazz Band meets from Sept. to May on Wednesdays from 2:10 - 3:30 PM.
 
Women's Chorus:
This club was formed in 1996 and consists of girls in grades 7 and 8. The group learns a variety music, uses choereography and performs both in school and around the community. Members must also be a part of the MS Chorus.




Drama Club:
The Drama Club is a group of MS studetnts that meet to perform on stage. We alternate each year between a musical and a drama. The club usually meets for several months to prepare for the public performances (Sept. - Nov.).

Hip Hop Dance Club:
This club is open to all MS students. Come join the fun and learn current dance moves choreographed to today's top-40 music. All skill levels are welcome. October - May

 

Academic Clubs & Organizations

Academic Challenge Bowl:
This academic team is comprised of 7th and 8th graders. They compete against academically talented students from other schools. Competitions include toss up and bonus questions on a wide variety of topics. October - April, Thursdays from 2:15-3:00

 

Art Club:
The Art Club meets regularly after school each month to provide students with opportunities to explore their interests in the visual arts. The club is an extension of the regular Middle School art curriculum and encourages visual expression and group cooperation. Meets every other Tuesday from 2:10 - 3:00 PM.

Extreme Chess Club:
The chess club is open to all students interested in learning and playing chess. From novice to expert, club members compete against their peers, enjoy a variety of chess-based games, and compete in area chess tournaments. October - April on Thursdays from 2:15 - 4:00.

First Lego League Robotics:
Students will design and build a robot that can perform specific tasks as spelled out by the annual challenge of the league. Their robot will compete against other schools. Students will apply knowledge in science, engineering and computer skills to creatively solve problems. Teamwork and sportsmanship are strongly encouraged. Sept. to Dec. Wednesdays from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM.

Foreign Language Club:
This club is open to any student enrolled in French, Spanish or Latin. The club meets each month to explore a variety of cultural themes like food, sports and holidays. The club includes periodic visits from high school foreign exchange students giving members opportunities to learn about other languages and cultures. The year culminates in an outing to a local restuarant to enjoy an ethnic meal. Sept. - June, Thursdays from 2:10 - 3:00.

Literary Magazine:
This club is open to students in grades 6-8. They will meet with staff advisors to organize and develop our school's literary magazine. This club is a natural extension of the themes explored in ELA classes. The club meets from January to June on Tuesdays from 2:20 - 3:00 PM.

Math Club:
The Math Club is open to all students and meets monthly to participate in a variety of math activities. Students also volunteer to tutor Manor School students. October - June; Thursdays from 2:15 - 3:15 PM
 

Odyssey of the Mind:
The OM program promotes creative thinking and teamwork by challenging teams to solve divergent problems. Team members have the opportunity to present their solutions in organized competitions. October - March. Days and times to be announced.

 
Photography Club:
Students learn how to use a digital camera to take a variety of pictures, portraits, group pictures, candid and action photos. Many of the photographs are used in the yearbook as well as the yearend slide show. Meets January to June on Tuesdays from 2:15 - 4:00 PM

Science Olympiad:
This club allows students who enjoy science to explore areas of interest. Club members prepare to compete in a variety events against teams of students from other schools. Meets October to March on Wednesdays from 2:10 - 4:00 PM

Technology Club:
This club allows all MS students who enjoy technology class to explore topics of interest in greater depth. Club members use Lego Dacta kits, develop computer aided drawings and designs, build and launch model rockets as well as practice using a variety of hand tools. Club meets from January to June every other Tuesday from 2:10 - 4:00 PM.

Yearbook Club:
Students work with Mr. Egan to form the yearbook staff. Together they organize and design our annual yearbook. Students are given a great deal of responsibility coordinating with students in the photography club to gather all of the necessary pictures to be included in the yearbook. Strong computer skills and creativity are a must! Meets September to June on Thursdays from 2:15 - 4:00 PM

Service Clubs and Organizations

Community Service Club:
Students volunteer to participate in service projects that benefit others in need. Service projects may include efforts to support local, national or global causes. This is a student run group with advisors that meets regularly to organize and carry out various service projects. Meets Sept. to June on Tuesdays from 2:15 - 3:00. Some events may be scheduled at irregular times.

 

Peer Helpers:
The Peer Helper program is a select group of 7 and 8 grade chosen by peers and staff because of their natural abilities to listen and help others. These students help guidance counselors assist new students and guide their peers through difficult situations.

 

Student Council:
The student council is an organization run by and for our MS students. The members work on many charity fund raisers each year, as well as sponsor dances and activity nights. They plan and coordinate our annual Fall Weekend float, plan special "dress up days" in support of various themes or topics, and make purchases to enhance our school. Meets Sept. to June on the first Tuesday of each month from 2:10 - 4:00 PM

 

Intramurals and Sports Clubs

Each season there are a variety of fun extra curricular sport activities in which students may participate. These activities will be announced and the dates posted during the school year. Intramural sports include the following:

  • Cross Country Running
  • Cross Country Skiing
  • Indoor Soccer
  • Flag Football
  • Floor Hockey
  • Swimming
  • Volleyball

Downhill Ski and Snowboarding Club:
This club is open to all students in grades 6-8. The club skis on Friday evenings at Bristol Mountain for a total of 6 trips during the winter months (starting in January). Whether you have never skied before or you are an experienced skier, there is a package to suit you. This club requires that students pay to participate and payment in full is usually due by November 9.
